Stadtwerke Lippstadt GmbH, a municipally owned utility of the German city of Lippstadt, has executed a seven-year tolling agreement with Uniper SE for a 20-megawatt (MW), 42-megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage project to be owned by Stadtwerke Lippstadt at the Roßfeld site.
Stadtwerke Lippstadt will receive a fixed remuneration while Uniper will have the right to dispatch the storage's capacity. "This agreement will secure additional long-term flexibility for Uniper’s energy trading portfolio", a joint statement said.
The modular battery energy storage system, which will use lithium iron phosphate technology, is planned for commissioning in the 2027 summer.
"Uniper will be responsible for marketing and the commercial optimization of the storage system, while VENSYS Elektrotechnik will supply the battery storage system and provide maintenance services", the statement said.
Stadtwerke Lippstadt managing director Siegfried Müller said, "As this project demonstrates, the transformation is well underway. As part of our strategic realignment, we are opening up a new business area and investing in greater flexibility for our energy portfolio".
"For Uniper, this agreement marks another step in expanding our business in flexible energy assets", said Nils Beenen, managing director of Uniper Energy Sales GmbH.
The companies said tolling models can "provide a clear allocation of investment and revenue risks between the asset owner and the marketing partner".

The seven-year contract is due to start 2027. When the agreement was announced January 8, Neoen said the battery was under construction and expected to enter operation later in 2026.
"Uniper will have full control of the charging and discharging of the battery while Neoen will continue to manage the asset’s operation and maintenance", said Neoen, a Paris-based renewables company under New York City-based Brookfield Asset Management.
"Uniper intends to optimize the asset across all revenue market channels from ancillary grid services to the wholesale market".
Last April Uniper and Slovenia's NGEN energetske rešitve d.o.o. began construction for a 50-MW battery energy storage project on the site of Uniper's former coal power plant in Wilhelmshaven, Germany.
"The battery energy storage system in Wilhelmshaven will balance out short-term fluctuations in the power grid caused by the feed-in of wind and solar energy in the future", a joint statement said April 9. "In this way, the system will sustainably strengthen the integration of renewable energies as well as grid stability".
The partners said at the time they expected to put the project into service before 2026 ends.
